This is a collection of fifteen bleak short stories drawn from the margins of society We meet amongst others a boxer on a losing streak a man who bets everything he has to get money for his dog s operation a teacher obsessed with a pupil a prisoner an artistart critic whose life has crumbled a wine sales rep on a train or is he We meet people living in the dark areas people hiding from the light or people abandoned by the lightSeveral of the protagonists in the story have become paranoid In The shotgun the street lamp and Mary Monroe one of the strongest stories in the book I think an addict with obvious mental issues sits in a room cradling a shotgun while his girlfriend lies ominously uiet and still in the bedroomThe first story Little Death sets the tone and gives us an idea of the style that is to come As with Meyer s novel Bricks and Mortar this story mixes past and present without feeling any need to explain which is which and when the focus changes This is left to the reader Also as with Bricks and Mortar this story and several others have a very dream or nightmare like uality possibly partly due to this mixing of chronologiesIt s not a cheerful book to read There are no happy endings and not even very many lighter moments as we head towards those endings But it is powerfully written I was reminded often of Denis Johnson another writer I admire Both Meyer and Johnson seem to have an ability to write about sualor and darkness in a way that makes you feel it rather than just read about itOstensibly this is a collection of fifteen distinct short stories But there are points along the way where you start to believe that characters are recurring and you are seeing new sections of their lives In Fatty Loves the overweight teacher referred to above is obsessed with a pupil He notices about her teeth that The two in the middle were a tiny bit longer than the ones next to them but just a tiny bit and when she is thinking he notices that that small crease ran from the top of her nose to her forehead Later in the title story there is an unnamed female protagonist whose companion looks at her top front teeth the two in the middle a tiny bit longer than the ones next to them but only a tiny little bit and who has a slight crease from the top of her nose up to her forehead Once you ve spotted that you are on the alert So when the protagonist in the first story tells us people call him Christian even though that isn t his real name bells start to ring when in All The Aisles the protagonist is asked for his name and says Christian even thought that isn t his name Then a Wolfgang appears in two stories with nothin explicit to link them but by this time you are really wonderingAll the lights isn t just one of the story titles it is also a recurring phrase through the rest of the book Light and dark play and important role in these stories It had to be after twelve and he looked at all the lights people were hungry and thirsty at night tooIt s the last night I ve got but I don t tell her that and we walk through the streets and I look at all the lights and then at herand I look at all the lights and talk about this and thatI look at all the lights and then at her but mostly at the lightsOutside all the lights us drinking beer or whisky usually in silence rarely making plans counting up our moneyIt was night and all the lights of the city lay twenty seven floors below usIn fact it was still evening but it had been dark since four and I saw all the bright lights of the cityIt s never uite dark all the lights from the city you know He was cold and he thought for a moment he d go back and drink another vodka but then he saw all the lights of the Chinese restaurant and behind it the town steepleHe looked at all the lights on the wallOutside I see all the lights of Nuremberg stationWhat s noticeable is that the narrator is always looking at the lights never in the light This is a book of people living in the shadows hidden or ignored It s excellent story telling

It s objectively a good book but I wouldn t recommend it if your attention span is as short as mine since the author switches between events which take place at different moments without an indication which makes it pretty confusing if you don t pay attention at all times Also the endings felt pretty rushed for my taste
