This is certainly not the best biography I ve read but it did a fairly decent job of providing an overview of Taft s life Sometimes this comes at the expense of ignoring the context of world events in favor of that which is directly related to the points Lurie is trying to make Lurie also uses the word indeedthan 100 times which indeed does stand out after a while Lurie s case that Taft was as he described himself a progressive conservative was not as interesting as the lesse This is certainly not the best biography I ve read but it did a fairly decent job of providing an overview of Taft s life Sometimes this comes at the expense of ignoring the context of world events in favor of that which is directly related to the points Lurie is trying to make Lurie also uses the word indeedthan 100 times which indeed does stand out after a while Lurie s case that Taft was as he described himself a progressive conservative was not as interesting as the lesser case that he makes around Taft s legalistic approach to his role as the chief executive Taft s years on the Supreme Court are mostly ignored which I felt was a shameLurie states his hope to achieve Mark Carnes snarky comment Taft will never be regarded as a great president or even a good one but perhaps some day his obesity may cease to be his legacy While I certainly learned a lot of interest about Taft and see that his position between TR and Wilson will overshadow his personal accomplishments I don t think that this book has done much to change Taft s legacy

This book is a biographical study of the life of William Taft America s 27th President While the author states that it is intended neither as a new biography nor a detailed study of Taft s presidency it provides an overview of his life from birth through his appointment as Chief Justice but not his actual tenure in the Supreme CourtI did not enjoy this book uite as much as I had hoped although some of that may bedue to a mismatch of expectations on my part than through any fault o This book is a biographical study of the life of William Taft America s 27th President While the author states that it is intended neither as a new biography nor a detailed study of Taft s presidency it provides an overview of his life from birth through his appointment as Chief Justice but not his actual tenure in the Supreme CourtI did not enjoy this book uite as much as I had hoped although some of that may bedue to a mismatch of expectations on my part than through any fault of the author I chose this book partly because it was written from amodern perspective than the only detailed biography of Taft the two volume The Life and Times of William Howard Taft by Henry F Pringle which was written in the 1930s and partly because it was the only one available as an e book While I did realize that it was not going to be as detailed as Pringle s work due to its shorter length it was still much less detailed than I had hoped it would be I was also disappointed that it did not cover Taft s time on the Supreme Court especially since he was the only former president to ever serve on the court although I understand that the author is working on a second volume to cover that part of Taft s lifeThat having been said I still found the book interesting and it did convince me that there wasto Taft than the way he is usually painted by history Taft s presidency is often seen as a failure mainly due to the fact that he was a one term president sandwiched between two muchsuccessful presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson However when you actually look at his accomplishments Taft does seem to have actually done uite a few things that would probably be viewed assignificant if they weren t outshadowed by Roosevelt and Wilson For example Roosevelt is generally known for both his conservation efforts and his anti trust prosecutions but Taft s one term administration actually addedland to the national park system and initiatedanti trust prosecutions than Roosevelt did during his 7 years in officeOf course it is true that Taft failed as an effective political leader during his presidency or rather he seems to have made no effort to provide any real political leadership possibly because he never really wanted to job in the first place However the author compellingly demonstrates that Taft a man with great judicial experience saw politics through the lens of the law and was alwaysinterested in adhering to principles than doing what was politically expedient That is a uality that I can certainly admire even if it doesn t make for a very successful politicianAlthough Taft might not have won re election in any case it s certainly hard to fault him for the main reason that he didn t win which was Roosevelt trying to regain the presidency No other president in US history has ever been faced with a still extremely popular predecessor from the same party challenging him for re election It was really Roosevelt s actions in splitting the Republican party in 1912 that handed the election to WilsonDespite not meeting my expectations this book was interesting and I did learn something from it I would not recommend it to someone wanting a full biography of Taft but it was a good read for what it was actually intended to be
