Angela Crocombe ì 6 Summary A lighter foot print Read & Download ☆ PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB Responsible travel and event management are also included Covering the subjects of carbon offset schemes and lighter footprint options for transportation energy water food household goods and appliances and even personal care items this guidebook provides the means to replace ingrained habits with sustainable behavior. It starts out badly like an environmentalist rant asking you to do a uiz on your footprint I felt like I was going to be in for a chore and an outdated one as it was published 2007 I ve met too many evangelist environmentalists in my life that don t understand practical application reason and don t actually practice what they preach They just want you to be their disciple That said after I put the book down I picked it up again because the topic is always of interest to me and went past the first 20 pages There s much in this book that is still really worthwhile Interesting ragged right layout and design too Carbon neutral um okay would love to know about environmentally friendly printing that there kind of isn t in existence but you won t get that from this book because the printing processes in Australia tend to be fairly nasty So the book glosses over that oneAs a how to it s not universal enough nor does it go into the detail Not one mention of soapnuts I think that s really odd Anyway good to see a colleague from my RMIT PWE non fiction project class doing something worthwhile

Angela Crocombe ì 6 Summary A lighter foot print Read & Download ☆ PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB Arguing that global warming is the biggest problem facing humanity today this well illustrated handbook seeks to reduce the heavy tread of the human race’s impact upon the planet Using a tool called the ecological footprint it estimates the resources that an individual consumes compared with the amount that nature ca. I picked up this book because I was curious to see how much anyone could tell me about how to lessen my personal impact on the environment that I didn t already know Turns out uite a lot This highly useful little book sets out systematically chapter by chapter the ways in which it is possible to live lightly upon the Earth Shamefully for example I had no idea that it was possible to opt to get part or all of your electricity sourced from renewable energies In chapters on recycling building and renovation travel appliances the office and several she gives advice not only on how to make the choices that are best for the environment when buying things but also tips on how to maximise efficiency in using all products and in everyday lifeEven usefully she provides links to websites and explanations of how exactly to go about making the changes she suggests She realises that although a lot of people are interested in reducing their impact on the environment most people don t want to have to lower their standard of living and they also don t want to have to make a great deal of effort to make changes in their lives She s here to make it as easy as possible which means she s done all the research all the legwork She also realises that people don t want or can t afford to spend huge amounts of money on replacing everything in their lives to make them better so she stresses the savings that can be made through for example smaller electricity bills after the installation of energy efficient appliancesI was very impressed by the way this was written This is clearly a woman who knows her way around a paragraph it was a pleasure to read except somewhat perplexingly for chapter 8 which seemed to have been written by a different person More importantly it never came across as being evangelical or preachy Rarely have I seen anything so sensitive to its target audience She said over and over that even small changes make a difference and that doing as much as one can now is what matters My major major gripe with this book was the chapter on personal care mainly because it perpetuated a misconception which is all to common the totally arbitrary distinction between products that are natural and products that are full of nasty man made chemicals even though she pointed out elsewhere in the book that the standards for calling something natural are ridiculously low and are highly unlikely to mean something is healthier or better for the environmentThe fact is most chemicals that we use in our everyday lives are present in nature Ammonia and sulphuric acid two of the biggest products of the chemical industry both occur naturally but you wouldn t want to put either of those on your skin Oil is natural it comes out of the ground But oil is the source of nasty carbon dioxide So it can t be natural can it She advocates buying the expensive shampoos soap makeup etc that isn t full of bad things to paraphrase heavily and which will be better for you in the long runI m not sure that I believe this It s interesting to note that the substances which are poisonous to humans are generally the things that they never came into contact with over the course of evolution The things that happened to turn up naturally in food and so forth we have evolved and adapted to use iron copper zinc sodium potassium are all integral to allowing our bodies to function So I think there s a case to be argued that it s better to use ingredients that humans would have come into contact with over the course of their evolution However even if the ingredients are the right ones there s no guarantee that the uantities used would be appropriate The very concept of personal care products is highly unnatural we didn t evolve to put shampoo in our hair and slather our faces with makeup every day Too much of any chemical is potentially bad no matter how freuently it turns up in nature Humans have been making and drinking alcohol for thousands of years our bodies have developed some tolerance for it it s perfectly natural you make it from fermenting stuff like grapes honey grains but if you drink to much of it it can still give you brain damage Hell even drinking too much water can kill you She also makes the utterly ridiculous claim that we should avoid using personal care products that are made from hydrocarbons One aspect of her argument is that it s bad for you probably because it s not natural I don t know enough about it it could well be true but the other part of her argument is that we shouldn t use them simply because they are made from hydrocarbons As if people are digging oil out of the ground solely so they can make moisturiser This is completely wrong and the sad thing is that I learned this at school when I was fifteen Demand for oil is driven by demand for gasoline consisting mainly of octane C8 Most personal care products are derived from propane and ethane C2 and C3 and a few other things like baby oil come from larger hydrocarbons The amount of oil extracted far exceeds the amount that is reuired to fulfil the demand for personal care products So really hydrocarbon derived products are in a sense cast offs or by products of the fossil fuel industry and in a way we re actually increasing efficiency by using themSo that was highly disappointing Nonetheless it doesn t take away from the usefulness of every single other chapter in this book Of course there are other limitations published in 2006 it s already slightly out of date it applies only to Australia there are occasional mistakes and omissions she never addresses the issue of people using the excuse that a product is organic to make it expensive than necessary which in my experience is the main reason a lot of people don t buy organicWhat would be really great would be if the government would put out something similar and update it every couple of years or so and that governments in other countries would do the same thing And that of this information was taught in schools And that the government and all other governments would do the billion other necessary and important things that would make a real difference to reducing the effects of climate change Because the cold hard truth of the situation is that domestic energy usage only comprises something like 20% of all energy usage so even if everyone in the developed world reduced their carbon footprint by 70% as Crocombe suggests we should aim to do the world would still be in deep shit
