Wow this book kept me intrigued to read what was going to happen next This easy reader chapter book is told from the point of view of a middle school boy Doug It explores his summer and how he is forced to make changes as a political election comes to his small hometown He is not interested in politics until they start to take over his every day life by taking over his favorite soccer field and forcing his summer soccer league to play on a different field his tutor Herb working for the political campaigns and his summer employer Mr Berling making campaign slogans However he discovers that he is interested in politics and realizes that they are very similar to sports tournaments At the very end he is nominated to join his schools student council This book reveals many important life lessons for readers For instance the book explores diversity through color and weight because Doug s best friend is a person of color and his worst enemy Tommy is a plus sized goalie on his team This book also teachers readers not to judge people Doug was shocked that his nerdy tutor has the amazing soccer skills that he did I really enjoyed that while I was reading this book that I was able to picture visualize the story and feel myself there with Doug and his best friend Keaton The illustration on the cover goes along perfectly with the story Doug is portrayed holding a soccer ball and many other things that take over his summer ice cream soccer and politics The image portrays the American pride that is shown throughout the book There were a few illustrations in the book that I did not care much for because they were very plain and a lot of space was left unused At the beginning of each chapter the author places inspiration uotes that offer advice to the conflict that is about to occur in the chapter Each of these uotes were once said by famous individuals The author describes each of these people on the last few pages of the book I also like that this book showed that change is not always a bad thing and that sometimes good things can exult from itLastly this book is an easy reader book best suited for third through sixth grade I would recommend this book to students interested in politics history or soccer In higher elementary grade levels I could read this book aloud when teaching about politics and elections The discussion uestions in the back of the book would make it easy to use in the classroom I could also assign a research report based on the presidents mentioned in the book through the uotes and ask the students to relate them to the novel
