free read When the Whistle Blows Fran Cannon Slayton ☆ 3 review summary ñ eBook or Kindle ePUB ☆ Fran Cannon Slayton About a boy and his father in a time when trains reigned supreme When the Whistle Blows is reminiscent of classic tales by Jack London William Golding and Robert Louis Stevenson yet carries the remarkable fresh voice of its author Fran Cannon Slayton should be extremely proud of this her debut novelEllen Hopkins author of Crank and Identica. Beautifully written book great voice and word choices in the form of vignettes which tell what happened in a small Virginia town in the life of the main character who is a young boy Each chapter chronicles Halloween day and night the boy s father s birthday in the 1940 s Main themes are family and the coming of age of this boy as well as the steam engine railroader s life in a changing time I didn t really connect with some of the vignette stories maybe too male or too related to the railroad but I definitely cried in some touching parts of the book and appreciated the history aspect of The Society
