Great Read with a very weak ending This is a very well written mystery with very few twists or red herrings but it took uite a while until I got the motive for the murders figured out before I could really identify the murderer I still have a bit of difficulty completely understanding how he placed the body and left no footprints anywhere but that is probably just me Most of the characters are very interesting with Inspector Coswell a real hoot At first I didn t like Constable Paul Blakemo Great Read with a very weak ending This is a very well written mystery with very few twists or red herrings but it took uite a while until I got the motive for the murders figured out before I could really identify the murderer I still have a bit of difficulty completely understanding how he placed the body and left no footprints anywhere but that is probably just me Most of the characters are very interesting with Inspector Coswell a real hoot At first I didn t like Constable Paul Blake very much but toward the end I grew to liking him muchThat brings me to my only big beef with this story the non ending In my way of thinking in any mystery the perpetratormust meet some kind of justice like either be killed off or locked up It is just wrong if not sacrilegious to let the murderer walk away unscathed That s why I only awarded 4 stars not 5 I am sure looking forward to the next two in the series

I wanted to give three and a half stars rounded up to four but the treatment of mental health PTSD at the end made me want to throw my e book reader across the room so I kept the rating at three stars view spoiler Seriously Someone having flashbacks is also capable of coldly calculated evidence hiding pre planned acts of murder NO Someone in the midst of a PTSD flashback is in fight flight freeze mode This survival reaction turns OFF the ability to think in such a calculated wa I wanted to give three and a half stars rounded up to four but the treatment of mental health PTSD at the end made me want to throw my e book reader across the room so I kept the rating at three stars view spoiler Seriously Someone having flashbacks is also capable of coldly calculated evidence hiding pre planned acts of murder NO Someone in the midst of a PTSD flashback is in fight flight freeze mode This survival reaction turns OFF the ability to think in such a calculated way It is terrible that Innes decided to take the low road on this mental health issue As someone with CPTSD I hate it tremendously when authors decide to further stigmatize us by this type of irresponsible writing UGH hide spoiler Aside from my concerns that came at the end really the last ten pages or so I did enjoy the book overall However there were other times when I was a bit frustrated with the writing Recently I watched a baking competition program where one baker made a delicious looking and according to the judges delicious tasting chocolate cake with a salted caramel filling Reading this book was like eating this cake except one made by a baker who also had some type of sporadic muscle spasm Reading along hmmm I am enjoying this book and these characters this cake tastes great Then boom Wow Where did that mouthful of salt come from Then back to delicious cake until somewhere along the way again BOOM mouthful of salt What do I mean by that The book is a solid mystery with an interesting plot and somewhat interesting characters The story moves along well But then out of no where there are these super abrasive moments where one of the characters just acts all aggressive and antagonistic toward another Most times it seemed entirely gratuitous including one scene where one of the cops had a conversation with a gratuitously abrasive reporter and on top included in the discussion another report who was not present and not part of the story just to add another that person totally sucks moment to the book I did not understand it Similarly I did not understand Innes antagonism toward the City of Vancouver a setting which played virtually no part of the book Eg in one of the many jabs at the city one of the cops favourably compared the apartment of two young women attending UVic in a building where most all of the tenants also go to that university to dwellings regularly visited by the Vancouver Police HUH That is not even apples to oranges That is apples to cow pies Regularly I found it disturbing to have these random episodes of hostility in the bookPhew All of that makes it sound like I did not like the book Overall in fact I did enjoy the read Enough so that I will look up the next in the series and see where it goes Certainly the plot was well crafted and worth reading I will see what happens with the characters as they go along in later books
