Lady Iona is your typical obedient daughter she has a reputation in society as someone who can always be relied upon to behave properly and never put a foot wrong She is the middle child and as such has always felt overshadowed by her married older sister and her beautiful younger sister She has been on the marriage mart for 6 years and her parents are getting anxious for her to find a husband they decide to marry her off to her cousin who is destined to take over the family estate due to the lack of a son in her parents marriage She decides that if she is ever going to have a chance of pursuing her dream of becoming a sculptor she s going to have to learn to be a little bolder in her decisions and show society that she isn t the good little girl they ve come to know her as She enlists the help of Lord Nathan an old friend who has spent the last two years scandalising society with his womanising ways and debauchered activities This proposal comes a time when Lord Nathan has decided that Lady Iona is the perfect tonic to his past this along with their close history encourages him to believe that he should make Iona his wife He reluctantly accepts to teach her how to be rakish with the view of developing a romantic relationship with her in the processLady Iona was written as an eternally vulnerable yet determined and increasingly confident young woman Her incessant need to become daring yet somehow always managing to need saving was endearing and made her character relatable throughout the ages It was great to read a female lead who was striving for independence rather than for the love of a man she couldn t have Don t get me wrong I m a huge fan of any romance novel but Iona s defiance in the face of society s expectation for her to marry someone was fascinatingLord Nathan s obvious regard for Iona made him likeable from the start and he was well played as her knight in shining armour However the most significant part of Nathan s character was his misunderstood reputation I felt bad for him throughout the book as he appeared to be the family member that everyone wished didn t exist he had it rough and I had a sneaking suspicion that his treatment was undeserved I was than happy to find I was right on some level His family s behaviour towards him played heavily into the way he then behaved towards others and I think that message was well written it left me thinking after I d finished the novel without being overstated or coming across as a moraleThe relationship between the two protagonists was brilliantly written there were ups and downs aplenty stubbornness on both parts and a history that provided a depth that a lot of novels of this type miss out on It was great to feel like the characters already knew each other because it allowed the chemistry between them to shine through from the very beginning of the story This isn t something that I would say is better than having the story build up in front of you but it s different to what I normally read and kept me interested in a new way Another positive I found in this relationship is that the stubbornness on both parts meant that I was never really sure what would happen next Most books I read come with a predictable ending and while somewhere in me I knew that this one would be no different there were several times when I caught myself doubting whether or not these two characters would ever reach their happy ending there seemed to be too much standing in their way even in the last few pages there was tension That suspense was excellent and kept me riveted I couldn t put the book down until I knew that Iona and Nathan had sorted themselves outOne other thing that I think is worth a mention is the way Lady Iona s attitude gave the book an added depth Like the message about Nathan s family s behaviour left me thinking after I d finished reading so too did the things that Lady Iona had found the courage to do under Lord Nathan s tutelage She had been dared to do things that she wouldn t normally have dreamt of and even made a few reuests of her own These challenges for me could represent all the things that people reading this novel might want to do but don t have the courage to In a way the author has provided a means of escape and relatability for anyone who has ever wished that they could break free from social norms and do something a little different Again this was not overstated as a message that the reader was taken away with them but it was written so cleverly that it happened anyway Brilliantly written

This was a cute tale of a proper Duke s daughter trying to find her independence in Regency England and of course choosing to do so by finding a wicked rake to tutor her in scanadalous ways Despite this trope having been done nearly to death in historical romance I still enjoyed it Iona wasn t UITE as stupid about her escapades as many heroines in similar situations though really the whole gambling thing with the mustache made me shake my head and Nathan actually managed to redeem himself in my eyes despite having gotten off to a VERY nasty start This was free on Kindle when I picked it up but I d still recommend it had it been regular price a sweet easy read with just enough drama angst and steam to keep things interesting 45 Stars
