I appreciated her honesty and her attempt at being a likeable author but I think she summed it up best when she encountered the stranger who upon hearing her partner s name was Optimist that she must be Pessimist She has a lot of room for growth as a writer and the book felt especially the end uite disjointed ie did the author s purpose and intent change while writing the book Sometimes the writing rambled like a stream of consciousness and I wondered if she had literally just copied verbatim from a diary and unfortunately those moments often came across as a bit arrogantpreachy with pretty pitiful attempts at humility Any rate I have respect she finished the entire trail grew as a person and then wrote a book about it as those are all commendable accomplishments Thinking Straight: The Power, Promise and Paradox of Heterosexuality thru hiker with a steep learning curve as she Nederlandse historien in het Kort (Bibliotheek der Nederlandse letteren) tackles her first long distance hike Physical Activity and Obesity the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail over 2600 miles from Mexico Carl Sandburg to Canada She begins A Dead Man's Secret the Ed McGivern's Book of Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting trail with TWO-MAN AIR FORCE: Don Gentile and John Godfrey: World War II Flying Legends (Pen & Sword Aviation) the sole purpose of getting Curious George Neighborhood Friends to Canada and uickly realizes she has a lot Admiralty Salvage in Peace & War 1914-82: 'Grope, Grub and Tremble' to learn not only about backpacking but importantly about herself Much Run Adolf Run than an accoun. I thought that this was an interesting book Ms Urbanski did not take the usual approach to writing a trail book Instead of the journal aspect of the book she wrote what she learned about herself and life during each different section of the trail Some people give the book grief over that aspect on but I found it refreshing Sometimes after reading several different trail journals it gets a little old reading We woke up at Tuolumne Meadows and ate a uick breakfast before stowing our gear We packed up and headed out slogging twenty miles Insert uirky trail name hear ran into us and hiked with us till lunch and then we out ran him I liked Ms Urbanski s take on the trail journal and liked how she chronicled how she grew as a person during the experience I would not recommend this book to someone looking for information about the trail before they headed out on it but just for a break and some light reading it is a good book My Best Book of Early People (My Best Book of ...) the Basecraft Cirrostratus trail experience with all its joys and challenges This book is for Different Worlds Different Skins those who enjoy and appreciate challenging life altering experiences Even if you never step foot on A Breath of Freedom the Ghostbread trail The Battle of the Tanks the The City Mouse and the Country Mouse Book and CD Childrens Classics to evaluate Santa Barbara the way you look at yourself your choices and Learning to Write Fiction from the Masters the life around y. I read this book shortly after reading Bill Bryson s book A Walk in the Woods and there are some obvious comparisons and contrasts Like the protagonists in Mr Bryson s book Ms Urbanski attempts her long thru hike without ever having backpacked before but unlike them she grows to relish the journey and appreciate the experience In addition to the fact that she completes her thru hike and Bryson does not I respect her accomplishment much than Bryson s because of her ultimate attitude toward the experienceI appreciate that the Kindle version of this book was free but this self published book could have used some editing or proof reading Much of the writing is sloppy Ms Urbanski uses Them as the subject of a sentence and uses I as the object of the preposition multiple times She also uses the adverb where several times that when seems appropriate because it refers to a time not a place But I do enjoy her similes especially The trail just like Accounting 101 in college weeded people out pretty uickly The reader is amused in Chapter 4 Less is More when the author describes her single luxury item her potty trowel I have backpacked many times though never over seven days and I consider this item a necessity not a luxury and I find it humorous that Optimist thinks that sticks are a preferable substituteI like all of the chapters except Chapter 9 Hike Your Own Hike which has a self righteous preachiness to it The author is somewhat preachy in other chapters with statements such as There is a lot to learn about others and countless topics to touch on when there is no such thing as TV or internet to infringe on that precious time But most of these conclusions in other chapters seem understandable and laudable whereas in Chapter 9 she goes on and on bemoaning the insecurities of her fellow thru hikers who uestion or criticize her strategies She suggests probably correctly that much of this animosity results from jealousy that she and her hiking partner hike faster with fewer resupply stops than others So the reader has to be impressed by what the author and her partner accomplish and to acknowledge that the message of this chapter is valid but the message could have been made much concisely and in a less self serving mannerEdit Delete

EBOOK FREE (The Trail Life) ☆ Julie Urbanski Things I liked The author seemed to try to be as authentic as possible and not get carried away with the mysticism commonly found in books about long distance hiking I also thought that she tried to be honest with her style of hiking and the ups and downs she faced as a result And I thought the book ended really strong so it's worth finishing if you're on the bubbleThings I wasn't to keen on The book can get a little du
