I enjoyed this uick read for its vivid portrait of Perth where I now live in the early years of the 20th Century I didn t uite feel like Harry the central character had a fully fleshed personality but his trials provide some sobering insights into the struggles of the long term unemployed Some nice turns of phrase throughout

FREE READ ç That Untravelled World Nellie and her parents vanish without a trace his world begins to darkenSet in the suburbs of Perth and regional towns of WA That Untravelled World follows Harry’s dreams and disappointments through the First World War the Depression and the years that follo. I read this through in one day which definitely says something about its readability The story is about a guy called Harry Hopewell who falls in love with a young woman called Nellie in 1912 She disappears mysteriously and he spends much of the next twenty years wondering where she went Harry s life doesn t work out very well at all despite the fact that he did some instrumental early work with wireless technology This is a novel as much about what doesn t happen as what does happen Eventually the duo are reunited but that doesn t work out either Harry is left almost alone at the end and yet he isn t entirely dismayed This is a good book to read if you are interested in the history of Perth in the early twentieth century I found it sedate but compelling enough and Reid definitely captured the sense of place and times especially in the pre WWI period and also following the Depression

FREE READ ç That Untravelled World Struction of a wireless station commissioned by the new Australian Commonwealth GovernmentHe is full of enthusiasm about the miraculous new world of possibilities opened up by radio transmission and buoyed by his growing friendship with Nellie Weston But when. Unless you live in Western Australia specifically Perth South Perth you may not really appreciate this book Having said that if you are interested in the development of radio during WW1 and WW2 you may enjoy this book nonethelessThe author can certainly write well he has a very good handle on prose However apart from the main character Harry Hopewell all characters were a bit too watery for my liking Harry on the other hand drove me insane He mopes and reminisces and feels sorry for himself or at the other extreme he whistles and chats incessantly I wouldn t like to have met this guy He sounds like a dripThe biggest problem I had with this book was that while the author has obviously done a lot of research about the era in Western Australia 1912 1939 he doesn t know how to convey it to the reader He uses the characters to state dry facts via conversations with each other or through reminiscing to themselves This creates a totally unnatural situation whereby characters momentarily turn into lecturers reeling out factoids in everyday conversation In actual fact the sole purpose of this entire book I felt was merely a way to deliver boring facts about a very specific topicFrustratingly this book could have been much enjoyable because the author set up some potentially interesting scenarios related to character interactions and family ties but he didn t carry them any further
