characters The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys Apes and Humans Free read µ The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys Apes and Humans 100 Taking us back roughly 45 million years into the Eocene the dawn of recent life Chris Beard a world renowned expert on the primate fossil record offers a tantalizing new perspective on our deepest evolutionary roots In a fast paced narrative full of vivid stories from the field he reconstructs our extended family tree showing that the first anthropoids the diverse and successful group that includes monkeys apes and hu. I think this book falls right into that awkward space between layfolks and specialists a fact which unfortunately consigns it to mediocrity Beard does a good job laying out the details but I think there are too many details here to appeal to the average reader Molar cusps just aren t that compelling even to most physical anthropology studentsOccasionally the book gets a little maudlin and I did not enjoy the re imagined conversations at all They were the weakest written portions and really distracted me with their absurdity Dan Gebo would never say to Chris Beard This obviously belongs to a small anthropoidIt s remarkably similar to the calcaneus of a South American suirrel monkey It d probably be along the lines of Crap that looks a lot like Saimiri The choice of conversation as a place for exposition is a bad editing decision just like in the movies Also while the last chapter is a mildly convincing plea to accept the truth of evolution it feels tacked on and unnecessary here

characters The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys Apes and Humans Free read µ The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys Apes and Humans 100 Ves the story of how his own expeditions have unearthed crucial fossils including the controversial primate Eosimias that support his compelling new vision of anthropoid evolution The only book written for a wide audience that explores this remote phase of our own evolutionary history The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey adds a fascinating new chapter to our understanding of humanity's relationship to the rest of life on eart. Chris Beard is the discoverer of Eosimius literally the Dawn Monkey The book begins with an introductory chapter on the discovery of this Eocene primate in China whilch he describes as controversial The remainder of the book is to give the background to the controversy In the second chapter he returns to the end of the eighteenth century to Cuvier s discovery of Adapis and traces the history of the lemur like adapidiform primates In the third chapter he moves forward to the mid nineteenth century with the discovery of Tetonius and gives the history of the tarsier like omomyid primates The fourth chapter begins in the early twentieth century with the discoveries of the Oligocene anthropoids in the Fayum of Egypt he describes them as already a very diverse and advanced group closely resembling modern monkeys The last six chapters discuss the theories about the origins of the anthropoids and our relationship to the other groups and reintroduces his discoveries in China and how they impact the debate To summarize he argues for a late Paleocene origin in Asia for the anthropoids as opposed to a late Eocene origin in Africa which is the older view There is also an epilogue a rumination on the relations of humans to other primates which has little to do with the rest of the bookBeard is clearly writing as an advocate rather than an impartial judge and the jury is still out I am not knowledgeable enough to form a definite opinion but I think he at least makes a food Prima facie case For someone who is a field paleontologist rather than a professional popularizer he writes well and has a good balance between the history of the discoveries and the actual scientific evidence The book has enough detail to understand the issues without overwhelming the lay reader although given the subject there is necessarily a lot of detailed discussion of teeth and jaws which are the main evidence I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in early primate evolution ie the origin of monkeys rather than apes and humans

This is an excellent book that combines first person narrative with plenty of insight into paleoanthropology This is no way a book for someone that is just starting to learn about paleoanthropology Be prepared to exert some additional effort to get the most from this book I found it helpful to have a Google search bar on stand by for the times that I came across species names geographical locations or concepts that I was not familiar with For example the author can launch into explanations of primate dentition and dental characteristics that can boggle the mind if one isn t prepared to do additional research There are diagrams in the book but I found external resources to be informative
