Read & Download Æ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF à Nancy Sathre-Vogel Nancy Sathre-Vogel à 8 Read Twenty Miles per Cookie Summary ↠ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Throughout our twelve month 9300 mile journey through nineteen US states and five Mexican states we four adventurers discovered a side of life seldom portrayed on the nightly news or in the morning paper Total strangers reached out and embraced us showing us a kindergentler side of humanity than the news would lead you to think existed Those Road Angels enriched the lives of weary. What I enjoyed most about this story was the inspiration to live boldly and adventurously regardless of whether you have careers and children or not I found their back stories of travel and settling down as well as the general idea of traveling by bike around the US refreshing and exciting I could have used development in the writing and as another reviewer mentioned a greater explanation and elaboration on some scenes in the story Regardless I m inspired and I suppose that s about half the purposeA couple highlights In my many years of traveling I ve found adventure is many times only one step away from disaster It springs from the unknown from having no idea how we will meet our basic needs It is stressful but the kind of stress I can look upon and say What an unexpected turn of events It s those days that make for the most memorable experiences and are therefore the most rewarding days of a journey location 1405We continued talking well into the night about how it seemed like the poorest regions on earth was where generosity and warmth of human spirit flowed the most abundantly location 1446

The story is compelling two parents take their 8yo boys on a year long bike trip around the US and Mexico The writing style Bleh Repetitive disjointed uncohesive and not compelling at all There were times when I wanted an episode to go on and it would end abruptly others where I thought it went on too long I suppose that s how they felt for parts of the trip but that s not how the narrativeevents matched up I would have liked insight into emotions other than the exhaustion and occasional fight Letters from the boys to grandmas are interspersed but other than those it is especially lacking insight into how they felt There are many pictures but even magnified the Kindle screen does not do them justice I should see if I can get a copy of the print book just to look at those

All we hear about it seems are the bad people drug dealers suicide bombers bank robbers and murderers By watching the nightly news or reading the morning paper one would get the impression that our world is filled with bad people people who would happily mug or rape or kill us But our experiences showed us another side of our vast world a kinder gentler side where people were kind and generous and than happy to give us a helping handWhen we pedaled out of our driveway so many months before we knew we would find adventure As we rode around our country we knew we would see a side of North America most people miss And yet all the random acts of kindness people offered astounded us Each and every time someone reached out a hand and offered us help we were humbled It seemed like those experiences happened every single day I enjoyed reading this memoir about a family who decide to take a year out of life to bike around the US and Mexico Some events in the book made me uestion whether that was really such a good idea but the above uote does a great job of explaining why it IS a great idea at least for them It s one way to see so much of the world than one could just in their daily routine of going to schoolwork home sleep repeatShe does a great job of chronicling their ups and downs of travelAnd where does the title of the book come from Here As we milled around chatting with stranded travelers I couldn t help but think of their dependence on gasoline They were getting around twenty miles per gallon which translates to a lot of gas And us Our boys fuel of choice was Oreo cookies I figured we were getting maybe twenty miles per cookie but at least we weren t stuck at a gas station waiting for the shipment to arrive p 117 She has two other books about their adventures one about them cycling from Alaska to Argentina and another about them cycling through Asia and both were just as enjoyable Now that I m done reading all three I feel like there is a hole in my life I ve been picking up one of their books and reading a few pages a day whenever I felt bored
